Mom Guilt + Self-Care

Because I work with women, the topic of self-care and mom guilt generally go hand in hand. Most women I talk to "feel bad" prioritorizing their own wellness because they think it takes away from family time. I believe this stems from a misconception about what "self-care" really means.

If you ask 100 different people what their definition of "self-care" is you'd probably get close to 100 different answers - some may include manicures, spa treatments, shopping, and bubble baths while others may say exercising, eating right and meditating. All of those things can be beneficial for our overall sense of well-being, and there is certainly a time and place for each. But as far as practicing daily self-care, I'll tell you what it means coming from a health coach.

For me, it's looking at the big picture - your big picture. When I work with clients, I look at their life from holistic standpoint - their overall well-being. What area is she fulfilled in? What area is lacking? What brings her joy? How are her relationships? Trying to fill the buckets that need more attention and maintain the ones that don't. In fact, I have every client do an exercise to figure this out before we work together. We measure it again half-way through, and then again at the end of our time together. It's truly amazing how looking at your life from a wide angle lens makes a big difference on those health related goals rather than focusing only on nutrition or an exercise routine. It all falls into place, the weight comes off (if that's her goal) and she has a whole renewed sense of self. This is not only how results are achieved but how they are sustained (which is really the most important part, don't you think?). If you switch the world around to "care-self" do you still think of the same examples as you did before?
